Position: Health, Safety and Risk Manager
The Health, Safety and Risk Manager will be responsible for managing a team of 5-6 facilities and maintenance employees which will include, but not limited to, monitoring daily work activities, writing annual performance reviews, and delegating action items.
As the subject matter expert in occupational safety and health and environmental programs and can clearly articulate, develop, and support implementation of a risk-based, prevention program.
The candidate will also have a solid working knowledge of Canadian federal, provincial, and local HSE regulatory requirements, and a thorough understanding of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Workers Compensation Management:
Manage employee claims with the Ontario Workers Compensation program including the insurance carrier, attorneys and DC operations managers as they pertain to claim handling and settlement
Ensure operational compliance with Ontario Workers Compensation program and companys return to work program
Validate and rectify discrepancies related to Workers Compensation monthly claims chargeback program
Monitor and manage site level regulatory documentation for incident reporting and claims
Manage site safety training program to ensure compliance and consistency
Health and Safety
Providing leadership and technical expertise to maintain company standards for environmental, health, and safety performance and ensuring compliance with Ontario Ministry of Labours Occupational Health and Safety act.
Provides direct site support for implementation of corporate Safety programs and risk management initiatives in the company Canada Distribution Centre. Manages safety related risks and liability by interacting with operations directly on health and safety issues. Follows all guidelines as set out by the Ontario Ministry of Labour in the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety act
Develop annual health and safety business support plans
Develop, implement, and maintain annual/monthly/weekly health and safety site activity plans
Conduct risk review audits
Report weekly activities and programs and risk review summary reports
Provide and/or coordinate required and requested health and safety as well as MHE training
Interact with external vendors and suppliers as needed to provide health and safety related services
Support continuous business improvement efforts
Support efforts to manage work-related injury and illness costs (coordinate with workers compensation)
Coordinate site emergency response activities, including evacuation plans, fire and serious injury plans
Assist in developing business continuity plans for distribution centre
Lead incident investigations for safety and environmental incidents and participate in management review of all serious incidents
Chair the JHSC at the company distribution centre
Be the technical expert and have working knowledge of all relevant plant, environmental permits. Ensure timely and accurate submissions of initial applications, renewals, modifications, and reports as necessary
Be the technical expert on all aspects of safety, including: machine guarding, Lockout/Tag out procedures, Flammable & Combustible liquids, fire suppression systems, hazardous material handling, confined space procedures, ergonomics
Manage the day to day relationship with an onsite third party security company
Ensure that daily security reports are timely and accurate
Review security related risks and coordinate implementation of agreed upon changes
Responsible for general maintenance of the company distribution centre, including distribution and office areas
Coordinate the procurement of third party providers of supplies and services
Coordinate services required from local property management representatives
Ensure building cleanliness is maintained throughout, including garbage removal, facilities cleaning and lunchroom cleanliness
Candidate minimum qualifications
Bachelors degree in engineering, chemistry, safety, environmental or occupational health sciences
Minimum of 5-7 years experience in the environmental, health, & safety field with a preference in retail distribution. Thorough expertise and knowledgeable of safety and environmental regulations including but not limited to: air, wastewater, storm water, and solid and hazardous waste regulations.
Should possess strong leadership, training, problem solving, and decision making skills
Should have strong oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated organizational, communication, research and analytical skills.
Experience and/or familiarity with the Ontario Occupation Health and Safety Act
Sufficient computer literacy to include MS Office suite, Visio and AutoCad
Ability to prioritize effectively
Demonstrated experience in collaborating/partnering to drive a holistic plan while incorporating local nuances.
