New York, NY USA
Founded in 2004 by conductor Yoon Jae Lee, Ensemble 212 is an exciting New York-based orchestra comprised of young professionals. The orchestra performs a diverse repertoire ranging from the Baroque era to the present featuring chamber music, ensemble, and orchestra concerts. This allows Ensemble 212 flexibility to range from an intimate duo up to a symphony orchestra of over fifty musicians. Chamber music concerts feature small groups without a conductor. Ensemble concerts feature larger groups with the conductor and musicians in collaboration. In orchestra concerts, the artistic decisions emanate from the conductor.
Ensemble 212 is dedicated to promoting and collaborating with musicians based in the greater New York metropolitan area. Featured guest artists have included violinist Daniel Phillips and pianists Ilya Yakushev and Lisa Yui. In 2006, Ensemble 212 launched its Young Artist Competition series. This competition showcases exceptional young musicians with a promising career in classical music as soloists with the orchestra. Each season, the age and categories for each competition are rotated to include instrumentalists, vocalists, and composers. Ensemble 212 was recognized for its excellence by being selected for WNYC 93.9 FM’s Salute The Arts *STAR* Initiative in April 2009. Concerts are held about six times a year in such venues as Merkin Concert Hall or the Good Shepherd-Faith Presbyterian Church at Lincoln Center.
