The Director is the full-time executive officer of Virginia’s
Official Quilt Museum, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization,
responsible for providing leadership to carry out the strategic plan
and policies of the Board of Directors to achieve the museum's
mission.
The Director will manage day to day operations of VQM.
The Director will create a marketing program that establishes the
Museum as Virginia’s official Quilt Museum.
The Director will develop a recommended budget to present to the
board. He/She will track financial status and maintain prudent
spending, and he/she will develop and organize a strategy to
increase major gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations
and others.
The Director will define and implement a staffing/volunteering
plan: recruit, select, train, maintain, and supervise staff.
The Director will maintain a quality of operations and artistic
oversight assuring a growing collection of the state’s best quilts,
outstanding exhibits, and world-class instructional classes.
The Director will serve as museum spokesperson to the local
community, the media, and the state-wide quilting community.
He/she will build and maintain close ties with constituents
important to the future of the Museum including elected officials,
state and local grant agencies, tourism officials, businesses,
potential donors, quilting businesses, quilting artists and
instructors, guilds, the Harrisonburg arts community, and the state
quilting community.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree required.
Experience/Education in Museum Management, Marketing, Grant
Writing, Fund-Raising, Quilts preferred.
Skills:
o Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of
museum management.
o Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of
quilting and curating a quilt exhibit.
o Considerable knowledge in marketing.
o Considerable knowledge of educational programs and
exhibits attractive to patrons of quilting.
o Working knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
o Considerable skill in interpersonal relations, oral and
written communication, building teamwork, and a strong
customer service orientation.
o Considerable skill in how to deal positively and effectively
with diverse stakeholders, including museum patrons,
corporate sponsors, city officials and staff, paid and
volunteer museum personnel, media representatives,
tourism representatives, and others.
o Skill in the use of personal computers and Microsoft Office
Suite.
o Ability to effectively select, train, supervise, and manage
employees.
o Ability to effectively use social media for promotional
purposes.
o Ability to effectively promote the museum and positively
influence fundraising efforts.
o Ability to prepare written proposals and grants for
submission to state or federal agencies, or individual,
corporate, or foundation organizations.
